About

Amy smelling flowers in nature

My vocation as a therapist is a culmination of all my life experience, personal values and curiosities. It is deep and meaningful work for me to help others navigate the 'murky' spaces of anxiety, shame and uncertainty, to move towards more self-understanding and compassion.

I'm originally from the Scottish Highlands, which has instilled in me a need to be close to nature and feel connected with the elements. I've also always found myself fascinated by different philosophical and spiritual perspectives, as well as all modes of creative expression, and these things very much inform everything I do.

I began undergraduate studies in Psychology in my late teens, but was struggling with my own mental health at this time, and needed to take some time out to care for myself and recalibrate. My early twenties were spent travelling, experiencing new cultures, and soul searching! I reflected a lot on my spiritual understanding of life and spent much time exploring practices such as yoga and meditation. For work, I applied my skills in uplifting others within the field of education, supporting neurodiverse children in school settings and delivering community classes for adult learning. I also sought out the support I vitally needed in the form of therapy, and found incredible healing through this process. This experience brought me back to my passion for deep exploration of the psyche and one's inner world, and confirmed to me that I wanted to train as a psychotherapist. This led me to move to Edinburgh where I have since trained, qualified and been working as a therapist, and feel very content calling this wonderful city home.

I have been working with clients since early 2023, with people of all ages and backgrounds, and in this time have been incredibly moved by the beautiful complexity of the human experience and honoured by the trust others have offered in sharing their stories with me. I know, from both my own experience as a client and what I have witnessed as a working therapist, that profound transformation can occur when we are met in a nurturing and non-judgemental relationship — a space where we get to really make sense of things and define our own narratives.

Key features of Soft Ground Practice

relational

at the heart of Soft Ground Practice is our therapeutic relationship. I will always prioritise building a warm, authentic, supportive connection to facilitate real healing. this will be a judgement free space where you can explore all facets of yourself. therapy isn’t something I do to you, but rather a process that we collaborate on and co-create together

embodied

the mind and body are deeply intertwined, and in this work we make use of the natural wisdom of the body to help guide us. this can mean bringing in somatic practices, grounding, breath and movement to support you throughout therapy

holistic

at Soft Ground Practice, I consider how many factors may have shaped you and your current situation, including how systemic forces such as capitalism, ecological destruction, racism, ableism and gender norms can affect our capacity to flourish and thrive. in this space we can name these systemic injustices and explore your unique path to healing & resilience. this may include strengthening community ties, cultural traditions, spiritual practices, creative expression or connection to the natural world

trauma-informed

I bring a nuanced understanding of how traumatic experiences can shape our nervous systems, relationships, thoughts and sense of safety. throughout our work together I will support you to connect with your own agency, choice and resources to develop feelings of safety and empowerment
